Highly Secure

Thorn SDS staff are almost all security cleared, they are very used to handling highly sensitive medium, hardware and scripts (up to and including TS).

Sensitive

Whilst not at the same level of sensitivity, Thorn SDS staff generally manage most aspects and data as if they were restricted. This again has its nuances, especially the management and separation of the different domains.

Non-Sensitive

There are occasions where we do utilise the unsecured mediums such as the internet and email for data / file transfers, even though on occasions we have the ability to configure VPN tunnels to transport data in a very secure manner using the internet as the enabling medium.

CCTV Control Rooms

CCTV control rooms are used by local authorities to provide a number of deterrent and crime prevention activities, as well as to observe and identify anti-social activities including:

• Deter anti social behaviour
• Disrupt and prevent street crime
• Look for illegal waste dumping
• Observe unlicensed activity in entertainment premises
• Observe fraudulent behaviour
• Gather evidence for court proceedings
• Identify persons wanted by the police
• Crowd control
• Emergency planning

Space Craft Control Centre

Space craft control centres are used to maximise the efficiency and use of the available ground segment and enable mission staff to communicate with their space craft when they need to. At ESA in Germany our team schedule a timetable of contacts where specific ground segment, around the globe, can be used to communicate with space craft. In this particular application our team often have to reschedule at the last minute, or change the schedule completely to support with emergency situations.

Satellite Ground Stations

A satellite ground station can perform a number of functions including Earth Observation (EO), Telemetry, Tracking and Control (TT&C) and relay communications. EO ground stations capture imagery, pre-process the data and then distribute products or data to end users. Thorn SDS has a team based at the West Freugh satellite ground station. This collects earth observation data and supplies products to European and American clients. The ground station also has TT&C capability to control geostationary networks of communications satellites.

Data Centres

A data centre is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It would normally include back up power supplies and a degree of redundancy for data communications. Again any security aspects and commercial sensitivities need to be managed appropriately ensuring data and security domain separation are abided by.

Network Operations Centre

A Network Operations Centre (NOC) is really the monitoring centre for various operational systems. This could be TV, satellite communications, data networks etc. Generally key aspects of the appropriate network are monitored and displayed in some sort of graphical output enabling the NOC engineers to appropriately monitor and correct if necessary the performance of the operational system.

Secure Data Hub

A data centre is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. Again any security aspects and commercial sensitivities need to be managed appropriately ensuring data and security domain separation are abided by.

Data-processing Facilities

These facilities generally collect and then process different types of data. An EO satellite ground station is one example of a data processing facility. A data processing facility will generate or take data from various sources, process the data to produce manageable deliverables or products, and then either store or deliver these in a timely manner to the end users.

Traffic Management Rooms

Traffic management (control) rooms provide organisations responsible for the highways to monitor and then manage traffic to avoid accidents and further disruption. There are various inputs into the management system, including cameras, observed data, phone calls etc. that enable the control room staff to take the appropriate action and provide police, news broadcasters and road users with the advice needed to avoid further disruption.
